English bulldogs look fierce, and a bit lazy but they are fun-loving and enjoy being active. Most English Bulldogs do need the push or the training but getting active with them is worth it.

This type of dog is very affectionate. They have pleasant temperaments and are slow to anger. This makes them ideal companions for children who tend to poke them and prod them.

English Bulldogs and Exercise

While English bulldogs don’t need intensive exercise, they do need to be active to stay slim and muscular.

Walking should not be the only exercise these fun-loving dogs get because they like to play games. There are many things, apart from walking, that you can do with English bulldogs. These activities are fun for them and keep them healthy and happy.

Playing Fetch

All dogs love to play fetch, and even though English bulldogs have short legs and are stubby, they quite enjoy it. You can toss a ball or any other safe toy for an English bulldog. The English bulldog loves to run and will happily pounce after the toy.

You do not need to toss the toy far as they are quick to overheat. For more excitement, you can even toss a frisbee and see the English bulldog jump into the air to catch it. You should play fetch with your English bulldog in cooler weather stick to shorter distances. Plenty of water must be available for your English bulldog to drink, especially after some physical exertion.

Playing Tug of War

Tug of War is a great sporting activity to play with your English bulldog. It is perfect for playing inside or even outside. Extreme weather conditions won’t prevent any fun with this game.

English bulldogs love to receive attention from their owners, so this is a great game for bonding. Your English bulldog won’t be too competitive either, but since they are a strong breed, you may find yourself on the losing end. Use safe rope or fabric that is strong enough to endure without harming either you or your bulldog.

Playing Hide and Seek

English bulldogs are smart creatures and need to keep their minds active. Hide and Seek is a good game for them to practice their hunting instincts and keep their minds busy.

The aim is to have them sit in one room or position while hiding a tor or treat in another. You then encourage the English bulldog to find the toy or treat. You must make the bulldog aware of what it is he is hunting for. Once the English bulldog has found the toy or treat you must praise his efforts. You can reward the English bulldog with a treat or by tossing the toy a few times in excitement.

Playing Puzzle Toys

Keeping your English bulldog’s mind busy is just as much fun for him as physically active games. Puzzle toys are mentally stimulating and can keep your bulldog entertained for hours.

Playing with a puzzle toy gives your English bulldog light exercise. Exercise is important for a bulldog and is best when not too intensive. Fill a ball or toy with a small treat and allow the bulldog to push the ball or toy around to try to get the treat.

Sometimes the bulldog can squish the ball or try to get rewarded with the treat, but he must reach a goal for the reward. You can reward your English bulldog with the treat and replace it with another.

Playing with a Laser Pointer

Laser pointers drive cats wild but English bulldogs enjoy them just as much. This is another game that is good for special bonding between you and your English bulldog.

Your English bulldog can simply chase the laser pointer around for fun. It is however also a great game for them to learn commands. You can guide your bulldog to the laser pointer spot with a command. If the bulldog listens and does as told, you can reward him with a treat.

Playing on the Stairs

If it is too cold or too hot out and you have a staircase, playing fetch on the stairs will work too. Your English bulldog may tire in this game, but exercise is important. Play for as long as the bulldog can handle it.

You sit on the top of the stairs and throw a ball or toy to the bottom of the stairs. Allow your English bulldog to retrieve the ball or toy and return it to you. You can continue to do this until the bulldog has had enough.

Playing on a Learning Course

Making a learning course for your English bulldog can be as involved as you wish it to be. You can use furniture or other items to create a course where the bulldog will get exercise, have fun, and learn commands.

This can be as simple as teaching your bulldog to get on a chair, under a table, and walk around a couch. One-word commands are all the bulldog needs to navigate around the course.

The better your English bulldog gets, the more involved you can make the course. Don’t forget to give your bulldog an extra scratch, praise, and even a treat.
