Bulldogs are some of the most affectionate and friendly dogs there are. They are loyal companions with amazing personalities that warm our hearts and soothe our souls. There is no doubt as to if they deserve all of our love.
Any pet that we have eventually become an important part of our lives. We get attached and begin to treat them as more than just our pets. But sometimes we can just leave them a little aside and forget about them for a while. What we do not seem to remember is that we are their whole world.
Maybe knowing some more about your English Bulldog will make you love it more (I doubt it). But if it just reminds you to show it some love, then the mission is accomplished.
Where do Bulldogs come from?
Well, they are not called English Bulldogs for nothing. Yes, they do come from England, but do you know anything about the ancestors of your dog? Bulldogs are one of the most known and popular dog breeds in the world. It is an ancient breed going back to the 1500s that has been bred throughout the ages, especially since the 1800s. They were created to be used in a practice called bull-baiting, very common in medieval times.
The English Bulldog would bite the bull’s nose and shake it around so the big animal would get scared. Back in those days, people had the belief that when the bull got frightened, its blood would get thinner and the meat would then become delicious. There was even a law saying that this practice was mandatory before slaughtering any bulls.
A big show
Imagine how strong and fierce the Bulldog had to be! He would face a full-grown bull with big pointy horns. At that time, there were not a lot of different ways to have fun. Any thrilling show like that would get a big crowd to watch it.
The Bulldog would sneak up on the bull, crawling on its belly until it was close enough. Then it would use its powerful jaw to bite and hold on to the bull’s nose. It would only let go if the bull could repel it or if its trainer called it. When the bull was scared enough, the trainer would call back the dog so that the cattle could be slaughtered.
Since those days people were big fans of those dogs that would give them such a spectacle. Of course, when the horns of the bull would throw the Bulldog far up in the air, they cheered too. But I’m sure they liked the dog best.
Personality
A good reason to love your Bulldog is its personality. The English Bulldog, or just Bulldog, as it is more known, is a great dog for keeping company. Although it is grumpy looking (that is also very cute), the Bulldog is very friendly and easy-going. It is one of the most amicable dog breeds there are.
It can be a little agitated when still a puppy, but when it becomes a full-grown adult, the Bulldog is very quiet and lazy. Its favorite activity is to lay down anywhere it can and take a good nap. When you hear it snoring you will not be able to hold your love anymore.
Also, it is basically the best pet to have around children of all ages, from babies to almost teenagers. They are very good companions to older people too. Perhaps their calm and patience are the secret to that. If you have a cat or another dog, they don’t care either, they love you the same and are polite to those other pets too. Although they might not be very friendly, they won’t cause trouble either.
Another thing that people appreciate a lot about Bulldogs is how quiet they are. It is a rare event to hear your English Bulldog barking.
Not all roses
Anyone who has an English Bulldog can tell you they’re stubborn. That may be true, but your Bulldog is also a very intelligent dog. It may take a while to learn some things, but once it gets it, it gets it. Be patient and train it well. Bulldogs respond well to treats and appraise, so that is the way to train them.
Take care of it
The English Bulldog doesn’t like to exercise a lot, but if you insist, it won’t complain much. Also, a good, not very long walk every day is needed to keep it in shape, or else it may get fatter. If you leave it be, it will just eat and sleep through all day. Its energy levels aren’t very high. For people who prefer a more chill dog, that doesn’t take up much of your time and energy, the Bulldog is the perfect buddy.
Give it love
I’m sure that now you will give your English Bulldog the love it needs and deserves. Besides being so cute and friendly, it has an amazing story to tell. I mean, they used to fight bulls! Go wake it up right now and show it all the love you’ve got. And if you are reading this and do not have an English Bulldog, well, I think you know what to do.
